In this documentary from 1979, director Rudolf Thome and Cynthia Beatt head for the island of Ureparapara in the New Hebrides, an area in the southeast Pacific Ocean, far from any major land mass. Beatt grew up on the island and speaks the native’s tongue. An unscripted travelogue, the filmmakers and crew quickly ran into difficulties from infections and boredom. Eventually, though, they befriend the natives and are able to record local songs and stories in the local language.
